The Medici Chapels, mausoleum of the Medici family, consist of the New Sacresty, one of the greatest works designed by Michelangelo, and of the 17th century Chapel of the Princes built to
house the tombstones of the Grand-dukes. The Medici Chapels house the tombs of various members of the Medici and the Lorraine families.

The New Sacresty (Sagrestia Nuova) was begun by Michelangelo in 1520 who worked on it till his departure from Florence after the fall of the republique. Grandiose are the sepulcral monuments: the tomb of Lorenzo and the tomb of Giuliano with the celebrated sculpture "Madonna with the Child".

It was the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de Medici who commissioned the Chapel of the Princes (Cappella dei Principi) at the beginning of the 17th century as the family mausoleum. Sumptuose work of the baroque architecture, has the octagonal plan covered by the imposing Cupola which follows the model of the Brunelleschi's dome.
